When selecting large umbrellas or market umbrellas, there are several important distinguishing criteria to consider. The following paragraph provides an overview of the most important features.
Shape
For the most part, square or round umbrellas are used. The square shape often proves to be slightly more practical, especially when several umbrellas are to be placed right next to one another. This makes it easier to shade large areas or provide protection from rain with square umbrellas. Round umbrellas are made of 8 segments, and square umbrellas are usually made of 4 segments.
Opening System
Depending on the intended use and size of the umbrella, you should consider the appropriate opening system. For smaller models up to 3 m in diameter, a simple slide system—in which the umbrella is pushed up by the handle—is sufficient. Other systems offer greater convenience through an effort-saving opening mechanism. The pull-cord system is an affordable option. Even more convenient are the push-up or crank-operated opening mechanisms, which allow even large market umbrellas to be opened easily with one hand. Freedom of the Table
Particularly in the restaurant industry, care should be taken to ensure sufficient clearance around the tables. Chairs and tables placed directly next to the umbrella should not obstruct the opening and closing of the large umbrella. Umbrellas with a telescoping mechanism are especially helpful for this purpose. The pole on these umbrellas consists of two sections. This allows the upper section to move upward when the umbrella is closed, ensuring that the rails remain at a sufficient height. All umbrellas equipped with this telescoping mechanism feature either a push-up or crank-operated opening mechanism.
Printing
All umbrellas can be printed with a high degree of flexibility. Even for custom-made single units, the umbrella can be printed with any background color or image. In general, most large umbrellas are printed over their entire surface. Various printing techniques are used to implement the design, depending on the number of umbrellas and their intended use. For example, in areas with a high number of hours of sunlight (e.g., in the restaurant industry), care should be taken to ensure that the colors have high lightfastness, as this varies depending on the printing technique.
Mobility
When selecting a model, consider whether the umbrella will always be set up in the same spot or if it will need to be moved frequently. Portable umbrellas or event umbrellas are equipped with a two-piece pole, which makes them significantly more compact when packed. Portable umbrella stands are typically equipped with base plates or fill stands. Folding tents are also a very suitable, highly portable alternative.
Design
Large umbrellas vary in appearance. These differences stem from their shape, frame construction, and color selection. Another important distinguishing feature is whether the umbrella has a valance or not. Without a valance, the umbrella has a modern look; with a valance, the design appears more classic.
Accessories
The most important accessory is the right stand. Here, too, there are different options depending on the umbrella and its intended use. In some cases, market umbrellas can be equipped with additional accessories (such as lighting, radiant heaters, and clamps).
